Americans want meals that make them feel good, both from the comforting nature of the food and a price that avoids the feeling of spending money they don’t have.

“Comfort and value are the twin pillars shaping America’s menus right now,” said Chad Moutray, chief economist for the National Restaurant Association. “Consumers are seeking meals that deliver joy and familiarity without breaking the bank, and operators are meeting that ask with creative takes on comfort classics and sourcing local ingredients that make healthy choices easy.”

Yardbird, a fried chicken chain with locations around the United States and the world, delivers on the comfort food end, but its pricey take on that concept may have contributed to its financial troubles.

“At Yardbird, our famous fried chicken is the heart of our Southern hospitality, celebrated by culinary giants like James Beard and Bon Appétit. Our menu reflects cherished family recipes and genuine warmth, capturing the essence of Southern charm,” the chain shared on its website.

Despite its appeal as a comfort-food concept, Yardbird Group has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

Yardbird Group files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy

Yardbird has not publicly explained what prompted the bankruptcy filing. But the Chapter 11 filing follows a series of restaurant closures, including its original Miami location, its Los Angeles restaurant, and its Denver location.

“Famed Miami Beach restaurant Yardbird has abruptly closed after 15 years. The fried chicken and Southern comfort food staple, which opened along Lenox Avenue in 2011, was a hit over the past decade. However, from what New Times can tell, almost nobody saw this closure coming,” Miami New Times reported.

At the time of the closure, the company shared its hopes that the shutdown would be temporary.

“While our doors are closing for now, we are hopeful this is not goodbye forever. We have plans to reopen in the future,” it shared.

The chain’s Denver location closed unexpectedly in 2025.

“Earlier this year, KDVR reported that a site development plan had been filed with the city, seeking to ‘take the existing Yardbird Restaurant and rebrand it as Rustic Denver with some minor modifications.’ But a Yardbird employee who answered the phone on October 3 confirmed the closure and had no information about any potential rebrand or reopening. 50 Eggs Hospitality, the group behind the Yardbird brand, has not responded to a request for comment; however, Yardbird is now listed in the ‘previous concepts’ section of its website,” Westword reported.

The shutdown happened after Yardbird missed a $50,000 rent payment, Business Den reported.

Update (11:43 a.m., Sept. 21): Yardbird reported $25 million in secured debt and another $25 million in unsecured debt, Law360 reported.

Yardbird intends to seek debtor-in-possession financing and permission to use cash collateral. It also authorizes a sales process to market and potentially sell the company’s assets as part of the restructuring, according to Law360.

According to legal documents filed on PacerMonitor, the 10 affiliated entities that filed separate Chapter 11 petitions are:

The company’s principal place of business is listed at 3355 Las Vegas Boulevard South in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Yardbird made a key management change

In February 2024, Yardbird made a key addition to its management team.

Joe Essa, former president and CEO of Wolfgang Puck Worldwide and The Thomas Keller Restaurant Group, joined the Yardbird Group as president and CEO.

CEO John Kunkel welcomed Essa to the company.

“Essa is peerless in the breadth of experience and success he’s had leading top industry names in their expansion plans, in addition to managing day-to-day operational optimization and excellence onsite,” Kunkel told Nation’s Restaurant News.

“His help will be invaluable in continuing to make each of our restaurants a place that provides outstanding service and quality to each of our guests, as well as a familial and supportive work environment for our employees.”

Yardbird has embraced comfort food

In addition to its core fried chicken menu, Yardbird has embraced other forms of comfort food. That included offering its takes on the classic hamburger for National Burger Month.

“This is a chance for us to try things we wouldn’t normally put on the menu year-round,” Chef Patrick Rebholz told FSR Magazine. “We can take a familiar format and look at it differently, while still keeping the flavors grounded in what we do. We’re excited to see guests come in and experience these new ideas alongside the dishes they already know and love.”

That matches what the chain offers with its core menu.

“Our culinary philosophy revolves around crafting dishes that embody the rich flavors and traditions of the South. Each creation, from classic to forward-thinking, celebrates the bounty of America’s South, showcasing premium ingredients sourced from specialty farms unique to each location.
